Mark Davies: Prelude
for General Public
After obscuring his initial composition with layers of matte grey paint, Mark Davies began to scrape away at the surface with a palette knife, revealing remnants of the original painting amid a field of shadow. To further complicate the image, he added enigmatic markings, working into the surface with white Conté crayon.
General Public, an art curation and publishing company based in LA, is revolutionizing the way we think about and collect art. Founded by Portia de Rossi, a collector and art world disruptor, General Public makes a radical proposition: a painting shouldn't be enjoyed by just one person, but should be available to all. The General Public Synograph, a groundbreaking 3-D technology, redefines the limits of printing, recreating every detail of the original artwork with total fidelity. Capturing the nuances of brushwork and technique, these textured prints are an authentic expression of the artist's hand.
